Immunochromatographic tests for detection of Malaria Antigens

- PfHRP2 (Histidine-rich Protein 2), only for detection of P.falciparum

- PMA (Pan Malarial Antigen), for detection of P.f. and non-falciparum malaria parasites

- pLDH (Parasite Lactate Dehydrogenase), for detection of all four species (P.f./P.v./P.o./P.m.)

Detection of Antimalarial Antibodies (used for screening blood donors, providing evidence of recent infection in non-immunes, assessing response to malaria vaccine in future)

PCR tests are used particularly in cases of low level parasitemia and mixed infections. The PCR test is reportedly 10-fold more sensitive than microscopy, with one study reporting a sensitivity to detect 1.35 to 0.38 parasites/µL for P. falciparum and 0.12 parasites/µL forP. vivax. The PCR test has also been found useful in unraveling the diagnosis of malaria in cases of undiagnosed fever.
